2008 is the “Year of the
Jelly Roll,
Sweet 16, and Charm Pack”
at QuiltEssentials
When we attend
Spring and Fall international quilt markets, we look for new
ideas and trends in quilting fabrics, patterns and notions.
Without a doubt, the current trend is toward pre-cut amounts
of entire lines of fabric. Since most shops cannot carry
everything that is available, Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, and
Sweet 16s are the newest solution. Charm Packs are 5”
squares, Jelly Rolls are 2½” x 42 “ strips, and Sweet 16s
are 9” x 11” rectangles of all colorways of entire lines of
fabrics. Many new and exciting books and patterns are being
published to go along with the specific cuts. Look for
special classes to follow.
Special Monthly
Classes
Thimbleberries Club:
Lodge and Lakeside ~ The 2008 Club begins in January and
will be led by Rose McNerney. Lodge and Lakeside is this
year’s theme, and members can choose to make a large,
bed-sized quilt or four different projects (one per quarter)
of a table runner, wall hanging, and two smaller quilts. Of
course, we have many different club activities, events, and
projects planned, so come see what we have to offer! We will
continue the tradition of fun and camaraderie on the second
Tuesday of each month. Members are reminded to bring show
and tell to get their names in the pot for the free drawing.
Membership required. Times: 1-3 pm or 6-8 pm
Our free
Second Saturday Sampler
begins
again in January. Due to the sampler style of the blocks,
the class may be joined at any time. Come to the store at
10:30 am on the second Saturday of each month for a free
pattern. Bring your completed block back on the next “Second
Saturday” and receive a free fat quarter and the next
month’s pattern. Join us for a Quakertown Quilts pattern
featuring classic pieced blocks in a star setting, taught by
Alice Kay Arnett. Level: Beginner and up
Beginning Quilting
~ Do you want to
learn to quilt? This class has been designed for those of
you who work all day and need to spend time with your
families on weekends. We will meet on the second Thursday of
the month from 6-9 pm and will cover all of the basics of
piecing and quilting. Each month we will make at least one
block in class, starting with the simple 4-patch block,
working up to the more difficult curves and appliqué. At the
end we will put them all together and show you how to finish
your quilt. This class can be entered at any time. Book
required
The
Strip Sisters
~ Not your
Grandmother’s Strip Club!
Cynthia Deveraux and staff. This fun
and unusual class will begin on the fourth Tuesday of each
month starting in January. Different projects will include
patterns and fabrics for Jelly Rolls, Sweet16s , half-yard
cuts and Charm Packs. Although we have the pre-cut strips,
you may want to make your own and lighten your stash. Think
of how relieved you’ll be! Come find out what everyone is
talking about.
Victorian Crazy Quilt
~
Rose
McNerney. This class began in the fall and will continue
through March. Many beautiful and creative heirlooms are
being created using this time-honored technique.
Magic Vines
~
Rose McNerney. This Block of the month
class is another beautiful Eleanor Burns creation which will
begin on Thursday, April 3rd, and continue to
meet on the first Thursday of each month thereafter. As
usual, Eleanor is full of tips and tricks to make your
quilting easier and faster!
The “A” Team
~
Our
hand appliqué club with Jackie Bath begins anew in January,
meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3pm.
Jackie is the leader but we also have a lot of participants
with new ideas; and limited time, so some of us are still
working on last year’s project while others are ready for
something new! Discussion of a new block of the month
project will take place at the January meeting. Stop by and
see if this is something you might like to do.
Kids’ Camp
~Cynthia Deveraux.
Age 10 and up. Save the dates! Since most of our
younger quilters want to finish their quilts before the
Albany County Fair, we will meet on June 9th, 11th,
and 13th (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 1-4
pm. We will start with a basic pillow case and continue on
to a larger quilt. More information will be available at the
store.
Special Events
We have scheduled
three
UFO Amnesty Nights
on January 18th, March 28th, and May
23rd, from 5:30 ‘til the last one gives up. We’re
ordering pizza, so bring a favorite side dish to share along
with your UFOs and let’s get them finished! Who knows? You
may want to exchange UFOs with someone else. Be sure to sign
up as space is limited to 14.
QuiltEssentials

Since so many of you have wanted this class to be taught
again, and have also requested a special class on the Martin
Luther King holiday, here it is again! This quilt, with lots
of curved lines is pieced using a pre-printed muslin
foundation. Whether you are using coordinated fabrics with
fat quarters, or a scrappy look, you will love the results
and will have enough blocks to make a 24” x 32” wall hanging
(before borders). This class is surprisingly easy and you
can get creative with your block arrangement.

Wrapped Coil
Basketry
Cynthia Deveraux
Come join the fun of making an unusual basket with all those
scraps you’ve been saving for something special. Wrapped
coil basketry is one of the oldest crafts in the world and
was known to all mankind. The modern version uses a paper
coil, and fabric or yarn rather than hunks of twigs and
marsh grasses, and is much easier to do! Once you’ve made
one, you’ll be addicted. All you’ll need for the class is
fabric, coil, and a large eye needle suitable for crafts.

Debbie Smith
This quilt looks complicated but is constructed of 2” strips
sewn
together to make a strata. Cut them apart, sew them
back together
again and you’ll have beautiful panels to sash
for a really stunning
quilt. This design is fat quarter
friendly, but could also use up a
good bit of your stash. In
addition, your left over blocks will allow
you to make a
table runner and four pot holder tops!

Are you still saving that big print for something special?
This is the
time to use it. By moving the center squares off
center and crossing
the frames you will achieve big quilt
fun and a contemporary look. The
construction is easy. The
sample is a large lap (54” x 72” on the cover
of the
pattern) but you may choose 18” or 13½” blocks in two quilt
sizes each and rotate them for many designs. There is also a
baby
block option. Pattern required.
