French Braid

 Instructor: Alice Kay Arnett

Make a project that looks very complicated with dramatic results, whether your fabric selection tends toward calm and peaceful or contemporary and knockout.  Although they look complex, these quilts are simple to piece, and once you’ve learned the techniques, the variations are endless. Be warned though:  French Braid quilts can be extremely addictive!

August

Rotary Basics 101

Instructor: Alice Kay Arnett

Learn basic rotary cutting and piecing skills. You will have a 36” square wall hanging or a table topper when you’re finished. This popular one-day class is offered several times throughout the year and is limited to six participants. Note:  this is a one-day class offered on two separate dates for your convenience. You only need to sign up for one of these classes. Pattern provided.

Beginning Applique

Instructor: Jackie Bath

We have had so many people ask for another beginning appliqué class that Jackie has graciously offered to teach it again! Taught in a friendly, non-threatening environment, this class will cover the basics of hand appliqué, an overview of fabric selection, needles, thread, tools and tips, and practice of basic appliqué stitches.

Basic Machine Guided Quilting

Instructor:  Jan DeBolt

Learn the “how-to” of machine quilting. A discussion of natural fiber battings, marking, sandwiching, machine readiness, and working area will be addressed. Use of the walking foot for straight line stitching and the darning foot for free motion quilting will be done in class.

Free Motion Machine Quilting

Instructor:  Jan DeBolt

Your machine can produce magical results once you become a free motion quilter. Come learn the basics with great results through many hours of PRACTICE. Jan returns to QE this summer in response to many requests for her classes.

 Irish Mist

Instructor: Sharon Patch

This great pattern, from the book Six Halves Make a Whole Lot More, uses half-yard cuts of fabric plus a background. The sample was done in shades of green, but would be fabulous in other combinations. The book includes six other pattern designs as well as a set of placemats.

Paper Piecing

Instructor: Cindy Vadnais

We know when we’ve met Laramie’s Queen of Paper Piecing, as she takes every quilt pattern and turns it into a paper pieced masterpiece. Cindy will be teaching a beginner level class in two evenings from the book, Easy Machine Paper Piecing, by Carol Doak. This class will be taught in two evening sessions to allow for homework, and is one you won’t want to miss.

Fun With Fusibles – or Roses and Tulips and Poppies - Oh My

Instructor: Gloria Gayo

What a fun way to use those wonderful, big, bold prints. This wall hanging is quick and easy, thanks to fusible web. Get your creative juices going as you arrange your design, and then embellish it using decorative stitches and threads. You will also make a double diamond border using the new Double Diamond ruler. So easy, and looks so great!

Mystery and Pumpkin Pie

Inspector Bertoncelj will once again take you on a mysterious whodunit tour of fabric land. This class will be taught on a Saturday rather than the usual evening format.  We can’t tell you more because it’s a mystery.

Rotary Basics 202

Bring your finished top back for the popular follow-up to Rotary Basics 101 and you will learn to quilt and bind your wall hanging.

Crazy Rays

Instructor: Alice Kay Arnett

Are you ready to make something fun and funky?  In this class you will stack, cut, shuffle, and sew it all back together again. Square up your blocks, and you’ve just mastered Crazy Rays. The four colorful stars separated by a thin sashing complete a 56” square wall quilt.

Pajama Party / Beginning Sewing

Instructor: Anne Leonard

Wait ‘til you see what cute pajamas you can make with flannels or the new knit fabrics we have ordered! They all have coordinates and will be perfect for the beginner who wants to learn to sew. Anne will take you through basic sewing techniques, cutting, fitting, and sewing on stretchy fabric. This class will be taught in two evening sessions.

Mariner’s Compass

Have you admired Mariner’s Compass quilts but thought they were too difficult? This is a great opportunity to make a folded 3-D Mariner’s Compass using some of the beautiful new Christmas fabrics for someone young at heart. These 32” projects make wonderful gifts for your special relatives and friends.  Bet you can’t make just one!

Moroccan Tile

This project is a beautiful table topper or wall hanging that looks very detailed and difficult. Alice Kay will show you step by step how to construct this decagon that will amaze your friends.

Autumn Leaves Table Runner or Wall Hanging

Instructor: Carol McMillan

This simple little quilt will delight almost anyone on your list. It can be made as sophisticated fall leaves or for a bit of whimsy the leaves can be converted to Thanksgiving turkeys! This project works very well for beginning quilters.

Blooming 9-Patch

Instructor: Carol McMillan

This stunning 9-patch quilt will radiate vibrancy of color and value from the center to the outer edges. Fabric choice is very important; busy prints are perfect. The design looks complicated, but it’s easy to make and is composed only of alternating 9-patches and squares.

November

 Ragged-edge Christmas

Instructor: Kathleen Bertoncelj

Choose to make Christmas Wreath, Oh Christmas Tree, or the basic Rag Time quilt. We have had many requests for ragged-edged projects.  When you’re finished piecing and snipping, your quilt is finished. This is a good one for those who’d like some freedom from precision piecing or just want something fun.

PJ’S Rhombus

Instructor: Alice Kay Arnett

This class is for those quilters who love the antique-looking traditional quilts. Make this quilt using reproduction fabrics for a traditional look, or use some of those fun, contemporary fabrics for a more modern look. This project looks very intricate, but using the templates included in the pattern, makes it a dream to construct. There’s a little surprise in this quilt too.

Birds in the Air

Instructor: Marilyn Lanham

This intriguing traditional quilt would be perfect in a limited palette such as all blues, or made with your scraps to give it an old-fashioned look.  Eleanor Burns has come up with another winner and, as usual, there is a simpler way to construct the blocks…this time it’s a “two-fer.”

Class Policies

1.  Space in a class will be reserved only with full payment of the class fee.

2.  If cancellation occurs within 48 hours of the first day of class, full credit will be given for a future class.

3.  All fabrics, books, patterns, and notions are 10% off when listed as requirements for a class. You will receive a materials list when registration is paid.

4.  All-day classes begin promptly at 9:00 am: we open at 8:30 am on those days. In order to fully utilize class instruction time and in fairness to all class participants, please have all necessary items and be set up and ready when class begins.

5.  Please bring a sewing machine in good working order that you are familiar with.

6.  To avoid being ticketed, free all-day parking is available at the Depot parking lot on 1st Street (between Garfield and Custer Streets). You may wish to unload through the QE front door on 2nd Street then move your vehicle to the parking lot.

7.  Please be considerate of others and do not bring your children to any classes. At other times children are most welcome!

Special Note:  Advanced beginner simply means that you have had a beginning quilting class, can sew with an accurate ¼” seam, know how to use the rotary cutter, and are familiar with your machine.

Sagebrush Stitchers is a community quilting group in Laramie open to all. There are no dues or fees and participation in activities is voluntary. Sagebrush meets at 7 pm on the third Tuesday of each month at the UW Animal Science/Molecular Biology Complex (off North 19th Street, across from the cemetery). Join them for a variety of casual programs, challenges, exchange of ideas, tips & tricks, show & tell, and snacks.

Welcome Home Baby Program is one of the ongoing projects supported by Sagebrush Stitchers. Baby quilts are made for Albany County Public Health Service to distribute to new mothers. Quilts are appreciated any time.
