The One Million Pillowcase Challenge

Saturday, January 23 and

Sunday, January 24

QuiltEssentials has signed up to participate in the One Million Pillowcase Challenge which is being promoted by American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine, Bernina, Handi Quilter and Timeless Treasures fabrics. Quilting Changes Everything! That’s why in 2010 we are challenging you to join our efforts to Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference. Every pillowcase can make a difference in our community. A pillowcase can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman, or beauty for a nursing home resident. On Saturday, January 23 from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, January 24 from noon to 5 pm we will be making as many pillowcases as we can for the following: Cathedral Home for Children and the Meredith and Jeannie Ray Cancer Center at Ivinson Memorial Hospital. We will have sewing machines set up in our classroom and staff to help inexperienced sewers. We will be providing free kits so you can stop by the store any time throughout the weekend and someone will show you how to make your pillowcase to donate to Cathedral Home or the Cancer Center.  Or you can make pillowcase or two at home to drop by the store, or you can make your pillowcase here bringing your own fabric from home to use. We have several basic pillowcase patterns and American Patchwork and Quilting magazine has provided us with several

new pillowcase patterns as well. We will be provided with treats from several Laramie restaurants and grocery stores and have a two-day marathon pillowcase party. Come have some fun and make a difference!

Laramie Soup Kitchen Donation

We have made kits for a clever new lunch bag designed by Possibilities. Each kit includes fabrics (including a new wipe-clean polyurethane fabric) for a lunch bag, two snack/sandwich bags, and a napkin, all of which are easy to do. For every kit sold we are donating $16 to the Laramie Soup Kitchen. This is an idea that Rose had at market, so we are particularly committed to this project.

March

In celebration of National Quilting Day on March 20, we will offer a hand quilting class taught by Jill Zimmermann. See class schedule for details.

Come see all the newest and best in our area.

Jan Gurnsey and Cynthia Deveraux will be teaching our junior quilters how to make a quilt. Come in and see the sample later this spring.

July

New Block of the Month Classes:

Club 72

We have a treat in store for you! Timeless Treasures Fabrics has teamed with Wing and a Prayer Designs to create a gorgeous new block of the month program for you called Back to Nature. It comes in either batik or regular quilting cotton. The batiks are in deep reds, greens, and golds, while the regular cotton option has a delicate, but woodsy look. We are finishing up the 2009 Tea Time quilt in January and February, and will begin the Back to Nature quilt in March, and will finish by the end of the year. There will be additional related projects, but the large quilt will be the only major project this year. Although it is possible to join Club 72 at any time, it is imperative that you either sign up for a kit by the January 12th meeting, or let us know that you want the pattern only.

This class is led by Mary McDonald and meets on the Second Tuesday of each month from 1-3 in the afternoon, or 6-8 for the evening session.  There is always something new to learn at Club 72.  Everyone brings show and tell, shares tips and tricks to make quilting projects easier, or brings in new pattern ideas. We have treats with recipes (always easy ones!) and lots of new ideas to share. Come in to see the new quilt projects and sample fabrics.

Registration forms are available at the check-out counter. Membership required.

Back on the Farm

McKenna Ryan is at it again! She has revisited the farm scene with a nine block, 61” x 71”art quilt that is simply irresistible. One block has a stack of five animals, and another is of a sunflower-eating goat.  All kits are made with Hoffman batiks, many of which were designed especially for this quilt. Space is limited to 12 class members. This class will meet the third Wednesday beginning on March 17 from 6-9 pm and will be finished in November. Cynthia Deveraux and Alice Kay Arnett will be the facilitators.

Continuing Classes:

Inspector Bertoncelj’s Six-Month Mystery

This class began in October and will continue through April 26.  By then they should know what they are making, wouldn’t you think?

Beginning Quilting Block of the Month – What I wish I had learned a long time ago!

Do you want to learn to quilt? This evening class has been designed for those of you who work all day and want to spend time with your families or friends on the weekends. Cynthia Deveraux will cover the basics of fabric selection, rotary cutting, piecing, and quilting. Each month we will make at least one block in class, starting with a simple Rail Fence, and working up to the more difficult blocks. At the end of the class you will be shown how to put your blocks together with sashing, borders, and binding. This class may be entered at any time beginning with a separate private lesson. Book required. Second Thursday of each month, 6-9 pm, fee $7.50 per session. Begins Thursday, February 11

Free Classes:

Second Saturday Sampler

This class will begin again in January and is a fun way to make a quilt in a year…block by block…no pressure. It’s also a good transition for the beginning quilter as we learn a lot from seeing everyone else’s fabric choices. We meet on the second Saturday of each month from 10:30 to 11 am. The first time you come you will be provided with a free pattern to make a block. When you bring your completed block back the next month, you get a free fat quarter and

another free pattern and so on, until you have 12 blocks! Please remember to bring show and tell.

The “A” Team

This is one of our longest running classes. For those who profess to loathe the “A” word, or who would like to learn more about appliqué, Jackie Bath is your shining star! Once a month, on the 4th Tuesday, the “A” team meets in the classroom from 2-4 pm. If appliqué is a mystery to you, some sit in on a class and see if this is something you would like to learn how to do. Jackie is also available for an individual appliqué class, which we can schedule for you.

UFO Amnesty Nights – We have scheduled three UFO (unfinished objects) nights this spring. We will meet on the following nights: January 15, March 26, and May 21, from 5:30 pm ‘til ??? Come use the big tables and design walls, share ideas and pick everyone’s brains. Bring a dish to share and we’ll order a pizza. What could be easier? Let’s get those projects finished and move on to something else!

The One Million Pillowcase Challenge

QE Staff

Even if you’ve never sewn before, come join us for a fun and productive day! Food and beverages provided.

February

Quilt As You Go Baby Blanket

Cynthia Deveraux

Sometimes you just need a gift in a hurry! In this half-day class, you will learn how to make a baby blanket the “quilt as you go” way, so when you are finished, you will only have the binding to put on. The book “Fast and Furious Quilting as You Go” contains patterns for table runners, place mats, baby quilts, coasters, and bags, so once you understand the concept, there’s very little that you can’t do.

Time: 12-5 pm (after Second Saturday Sampler)

Level:  Beginner

Fee:  $20.00 (includes the cost of the book)

Hand Piecing

Jill Zimmermann

Learn to piece like a pro – by hand! We’ll teach you to make templates and to stitch around curves and corners – without a sewing machine. Hand piecing is great for those who are on the go…and aren’t we all “on the go, all the time” these days?

Time:  9am - 4 pm

 Level:  Beginner

Fee:  $25

Day and Night

Marilyn Lanham

From Eleanor Burns herself: “Day and Night will mystify, enchant, and entertain you. It is magical. There are no smoke and mirrors – the technique is totally awesome.” This beautiful quilt is made by sewing strips together and cutting them into triangles with a ruler that comes with the book. There is no waste, as Eleanor has included two additional projects to make from the “cut aways.”

Date:  Saturday, February 20

Time:  9 am – 4 pm

Level:  Advanced beginner

Fee: $25

New York Beauty

Carol McMillan

This design with lots of curved lines and points is pieced using a pre-printed muslin foundation.  Whether you are using coordinated fabrics with fat quarters or making a scrappy quilt, you will love the results and will have enough blocks to make a 24” x 32” wall hanging (before borders). This class is surprisingly easy and allows for creativity in fabric selection block arrangement.

Date:  Saturday, February 27

Time:  9am - 4 pm

Level:  Advanced beginner

Fee:  $25

March

Got Scraps?

Daenette More

Since there were many more people than we had room for in the class last fall, we are offering it twice this schedule! Hopefully one of the two dates will work for you.  Got Scraps? Is an original design by “Charlie” and is a “quilt as you go” technique where finished circles can be sewn in a straight line to produce “old pattern looks.” This sewing technique requires no binding or finishing of edges. Your project can be as small as a placemat or grow to be as large as you want. Circles are impressive and they are easy. This scrappy quilt is the answer to “how can I use all those scraps that I can’t throw away?” And, if you have no scraps, fat quarters can be used. Starter kit required. Free pattern provided.

Dates:  Saturday, March 6 or Saturday, May 22.  (Sign up for either…not both)

Time:  9 am – 4 pm

Level:  Advanced beginner

Fee:  $25, plus $15 for starter kit

Hand Quilting

Jill Zimmermann

Learn the mystery of all those tiny hand quilted stitches you’ve often admired in antique quilts. Class gives an overview of thimbles, needles, battings, and stencils. You’ll learn to mark, layer, and baste your quilt in preparation for hand quilting. Jill will show you several different techniques for manipulating that ornery little needle. Hand quilting is highly addictive – your instructor has been hand quilting for over 30 years and still loves it!

Date: Saturday, March 20

Time: 9 am – 4 pm

Level: Beginner

Fee: $25

Feathered Star

Alice Kay Arnett

This traditional pattern intimidates some quilters, but Alice Kay teaches us how conquer it. Accurate cutting and sewing are the keys to a successful finished project. After you learn the step-by-step techniques necessary to complete this one, you’ll want to make more feathered stars.

Date:  Friday, March 26

Time:  9 am – 4 pm

Level:  Advanced  beginner

Fee:  $25

Wedgeworks

Alice Kay Arnett

She makes this dimensional circular wall hanging look easy! The goal for this class is to get the top almost completed in one day. Get an early start on Christmas gifts; you’ll want to make more than one!

Date:  Saturday, March 27

Time:  9 am – 4 pm

Level:  Advanced beginner

Fee:  $25

April

Thangle your Stash

Kathleen Bertoncelj

Use medium/dark and light fabrics from your stash (or purchase fat quarters) to create this great scrap quilt with a woven illusion. One option for making the half square triangles will utilize Thangles. The class sample is throw size (54x69) and in a planned color scheme. This quilt, which can be made in any size, is most effective with a wide variety of light and dark scraps.

Date:  Wednesdays, April 7 & 14

Time:  6-9 pm

Level: Advanced beginner

Fee:  $25

Rotary Basics 101

Alice Kay Arnett

Learn basic rotary cutting and piecing skills. You will have a 36” square wall hanging or a table-topper when you are finished. This popular one-day class is offered several times throughout the year and is limited to six participants. Note: This is a one-day class offered on two separate dates for your convenience.  You only need to sign up for one of these classes.  Pattern provided.

Dates:  Friday, April 9 or Saturday, June 5

Time:  9 am to 4 pm

Level:  Beginner

Fee: $25
